Occupational Health Blood Tests

Many employers, universities and agencies ask for proof of immunity or screening results before you start. You can book these blood tests yourself, with no referral. We check your photo ID, take your sample at our Notting Hill clinic and send it directly to an accredited laboratory. One of our GPs then reviews your results and signs a letter you can give to your employer or occupational health team.

Who is this for?

  • Student nurses, doctors, dentists and midwives
  • NHS, agency and private healthcare staff
  • Locum doctors
  • Care workers and dental teams
  • Laboratory staff
  • Nursery and school staff
  • Vets and animal handlers
  • Food handlers
  • Healthcare professionals moving to work abroad
  • Seafarers and cruise crew

Packages

All packages include the blood draw, laboratory fees, a photo-ID check and a GP-signed results letter.

Immunity Check: £265
Shows whether you’re protected against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.

  • Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs), with level
  • Measles IgG (titre)
  • Mumps IgG (titre)
  • Rubella IgG (titre)
  • Varicella zoster (chickenpox) IgG (titre)

Healthcare Starter: £425
For new NHS, agency and private healthcare staff.

  • Everything in the Immunity Check
  • TB blood test (QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus)

Blood-Borne Virus / Needlestick Injury Screen: £195
For employers or overseas registration bodies that ask for HIV and hepatitis screening, or for testing after a needlestick or sharps injury.

  • HIV 1 & 2 antigen/antibody
  • Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)
  • Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)
  • Hepatitis C antibody

Add-on: Hepatitis C RNA (PCR): £220
Detects hepatitis C earlier than the antibody test. Usually recommended around 6 weeks after a needlestick or sharps injury, as advised by your doctor or occupational health team.

Had a needlestick injury in the last 72 hours? Don’t wait for a blood test appointment. Go to A&E or your occupational health department now, as you may need urgent treatment (post-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent HIV or hepatitis B. This screen is for baseline or follow-up testing, at the times your doctor or occupational health team advises.

Complete Occupational Screen: £575
Everything at once, for a full clearance form or a move abroad.

  • Immunity Check
  • TB blood test (QuantiFERON)
  • Blood-Borne Virus / Needlestick Injury Screen

Single tests

  • Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs): £119
  • Measles IgG (titre): £119
  • Chickenpox (varicella) IgG (titre): £119
  • Hepatitis A IgG (titre): £119
  • Syphilis antibody: £119
  • Full hepatitis B profile: £159
  • MMR immunity (titre): £179
  • TB blood test (QuantiFERON): £195
  • Hepatitis C RNA (PCR): £220
  • Rabies antibody (titre): £229

Full hepatitis B profile includes hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), surface antibody (anti-HBs) with level, total core antibody (anti-HBc IgG/IgM) and core IgM. It shows your immunity and whether you have a current or past hepatitis B infection.

Hepatitis B surface antibody shows your level of protection from the hepatitis B vaccine. It’s also the test to have 1–4 months after finishing a vaccine course.

Rabies antibody results take around 3–4 weeks, as samples are sent to a specialist laboratory.

Single tests include the blood draw, ID check and a signed letter.

How it works

  1. Book and pay online. Choose a package or single test. Payment is taken when you book. If you have a form from your employer or university, email it to office@thehillpractice.com and we’ll confirm which tests you need.
  2. Bring photo ID. Please bring your passport, driving licence or NHS ID badge. We record it against your sample.
  3. Have your blood taken. It takes about 10 minutes at our Notting Hill clinic. We send your sample directly to the laboratory, and you don’t handle it at any point.
  4. Receive your results and signed letter. A GP reviews your results and emails you a signed letter.
  5. Top up if needed. If you’re not immune, you can book your vaccinations with us and we’ll update your letter once your course is complete.

TB blood tests have to reach the laboratory within a set time, so these are booked on weekday mornings only.

Your results letter

Your letter includes:

  • your name, date of birth and the photo ID we checked
  • the date your sample was taken
  • each result, with its value and reference range
  • a clear statement of whether you are immune
  • the laboratory’s details
  • the reviewing GP’s signature and GMC number

We can also complete your employer’s or university’s own form.

Our letter reports your results and immunity status. Decisions about clearance for a particular role are made by your employer’s occupational health team.

Your results

Most results are ready within 1–3 working days. TB blood tests take 3–5 working days, and rabies antibody tests around 3–4 weeks. You’ll be told how long your tests will take when you book.

If any of your results are very abnormal, a doctor will contact you urgently. Please make sure your phone number and email address are correct when you book.

Not immune? Vaccinations at the practice

  • Hepatitis B: £95 per dose (course of 3, or a single booster)
  • MMR: £75 per dose (usually 2 doses, 1 month apart)
  • Chickenpox: £105 per dose (2 doses, 4–8 weeks apart)

Finished your hepatitis B course? Have a hepatitis B surface antibody test (£119) 1–4 months afterwards to confirm the vaccine has worked.

Exposure-prone procedures (EPP)

If you need clearance for exposure-prone procedures (for example as a surgeon, dentist, midwife or some healthcare students), UK guidance requires your blood-borne virus tests to be taken by your own occupational health department. Our results are useful for knowing your status in advance, but please check with your occupational health team before booking.

Cancellations and payment

Payment for your appointment is taken when you book. Please give at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange. A £50 fee applies for late cancellations and missed appointments.
