Genetic Screening

At The Hill Practice, we offer advanced genetic screening to help you better understand your inherited risk of certain health conditions — allowing for earlier detection, prevention, and informed decision-making.

Genetic testing can provide valuable insight into your predisposition to specific cancers and other chronic diseases. It may be appropriate if you have a strong family history of a particular condition, are planning for the future, or simply want to take a proactive role in your long-term health.

We offer a range of genetic tests, including screening for inherited variants associated with:

  • Breast and ovarian cancer (including BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations)
  • Prostate cancer
  • Colorectal cancer (e.g. Lynch syndrome)
  • Pancreatic and endometrial cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease (e.g. APOE genotyping)
  • Other hereditary cancer syndromes

All tests are carried out with care, clarity, and confidentiality. Before any genetic screening is performed, you’ll have a consultation with Dr Mona Barzin to discuss your personal and family medical history, the purpose of the test, and the possible implications of the results.

If testing is appropriate, we will guide you through the process and ensure you fully understand the results and what they mean for you and your family. Where necessary, we can refer you for genetic counselling or coordinate ongoing screening and risk-reduction strategies.

Please contact us before booking to confirm whether we offer the specific genetic test you are interested in, as test panels and availability may vary.

Genetic screening can be a powerful tool — but it must be used thoughtfully, with the right support and interpretation. We’re here to provide both.

Frequently asked questions

Genetic screening involves testing your DNA to identify inherited changes (mutations) that may increase your risk for certain conditions — particularly cancers and chronic diseases. It allows for earlier detection, targeted screening, and proactive health planning.

We offer screening for a range of inherited risks, including:

  • BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations (linked to breast and ovarian cancer)
  • Lynch syndrome (associated with colorectal and endometrial cancers)
  • Prostate, pancreatic, and other hereditary cancers
  • APOE genotyping (for Alzheimer’s disease)

Genetic screening may be appropriate if:

  • You have a strong family history of cancer or early-onset chronic disease
  • You want to understand your hereditary risk for planning or prevention
  • You’re exploring fertility or family planning decisions
  • You’ve been advised to consider testing by another healthcare professional

Dr Mona Barzin will review your medical and family history, explain the test’s purpose and limitations, and ensure you understand what the results may mean — not just for you, but potentially for your family members too.

Samples (typically saliva or blood) are collected in-clinic and sent to accredited external laboratories for analysis. We will guide you through the logistics and timelines involved.

Most genetic test results are available within 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the test panel used. We will contact you to arrange a follow-up consultation once results are ready.

Some patients benefit from genetic counselling, especially if a mutation is detected. We can arrange a referral to a trusted specialist to help you process results, understand implications, and explore preventive options.

Yes. All genetic screening and results are handled with complete privacy and discretion. We will only share information with your consent.

Yes. Genetic screening can complement a wider health check or Well Woman / Well Man assessment, especially if you’re focused on long-term disease prevention.

Please contact us before booking to discuss your needs and confirm test availability. Appointments are available via phone, email, or online for patients from Notting Hill, Kensington, Chelsea, Marylebone, and the wider West London area.
